attendance shield
27 - Who is being awarded the attendance shield?
The competition year for the Club Run Attendance Shield will be from 1st January until 31st December annually.
To enter, club members must submit a list of attended club runs at the end of December or before the 12th of January of the following year.
To make the award fair to working and non-working club members who may ride more than once a week, it is necessary to nominate the day for your rides to count towards the award. For example, you normally ride on a Saturday, then you state Saturday and are free to ride with any Saturday group, and this will be counted towards your score, provided that you start with the group and ride with them to the coffee break. But if you ride on Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays, choose one of those days, and it applies for the full year. Official Club Runs are as advertised on the Club website, and only these are eligible.
Most group coordinators submit their attendance lists at the end of December, so if you ride in one of these groups, your attendance is automatically sent in so you don’t need to do anything. Please check that your group coordinator is going to do this.
If your group coordinator doesn’t submit attendance details, or you ride with several different groups throughout the year, then you will need to submit your own ride details using the Club Runs Record Form
You will need the coordinators of all the groups you ride with to sign/approve your submission.
Submissions are to be emailed to the Director of Club Runs clubruns@sanfairyanncee.co.uk
Trophy history:
In 1926, Mr J. Amos offered to start a subscription list to purchase a cup for the annual competition for members scoring the largest number of attendances.
This offer was accepted with thanks. Then, in 1927, after a lengthy discussion as to the purchase of a cup for the annual competition to be held by the member scoring the highest number of attendances in each year, as decided at the last Annual General Meeting, it was resolved not to purchase such a cup, but to give a prize each year to the member scoring the highest number of marks.
The following rules were adopted to govern this competition:
Members riding out to tea with the Club and home with the Club shall be given two marks for attendance on each occasion. Members who only ride out with the Club or home with the Club shall be given one mark.
If any question arises as to whether a member is eligible for one or two marks on any run, such questions shall be decided by the members present on that run, and in the event of a dispute, the facts shall be reported to a General Meeting of the Club, the decision of which shall be final.
The member scoring the highest number of marks during the year shall be awarded a prize at a cost not exceeding ten shillings, the member being allowed to pay any extra amount necessary to purchase a particular article.
In the event of a tie, the members scoring the highest number of marks shall each receive a prize, the amount allowed by Regulation 3 being shared in equal proportions.
In 1928, our President, Mr. Girdlestone (Daddy), had the most regular and highest attendance. Ron Lucas ran him very close, and these two had a clear lead compared to the rest of the Club. Daddy was presented with the prize.
The actual trophy (shield) had not yet been produced.
The shield itself ... it is not clear exactly when the Attendance shield arrived at the scene as we have been unable to find a reference in the books or archive. We know it was decided not to purchase it right away back in 1926 as it was too costly, and we still didn’t have a physical trophy shortly after the war, so sometime between 1945 and the early 50th, the Attendance Shield was produced.
