New Management Structure

The proposed new management structure was approved by a large majority at the Annual General Meeting last Sunday.

The role of the new Directors is to look for ways in which the club can develop its current activities in a manner that will continue to attract new members, mainly but not exclusivley on the racing side. Increasing general awareness of the club outside local cycling circles is also an intention.

There is no change to the number of Officers and these will continue to be responsible for organising the day to day club activities. However instead of meeting monthly as a committee they will report to an appropriate Director and the Directors and General Secretary will meet a minimum of 6 times a year. The posts of Director of Finance and Treasurer must be held by different people but this does not apply to the others.

In agreeing these changes the AGM recognised that the first year will undoubtedly throw up issues that will have to be be addressed at next year's meeting. The need to move the club forward and stop the loss of promising young talent took priority over examining the minutiae of the changes.

Hopefully the overall business experience of the Directors, backed by the specialised knowledge and experience of the Officers will build on the history of the club's 90 years and strengthen it as it moves towards the centenary and beyond.

Steve Berry has again reduced his own 50 and 100 mile records. The 50 is now 1-43-37, set on 2nd July, whilst in the National Championship 100 a week later he did 3-41-28.

Steve took on the job of Club Recorder in December 2009 - perhaps he thought that it also required him to be Club Record Breaker!

Despite a very windy morning Steve Berry has taken another 5 minutes and 4 seconds off the record that he set in July last year. It now stands at 3h 43m 20s

He is now competing at the highest level and is aiming at a high placing in the National B.A.R. competition.

2 new club records

Steve Berry is carrying on where he left off at the end of last season.

On 22nd April he rode a 10 on the V718 in Yorkshire and did 19m-17s, a personal best by over a minute and taking 19 seconds off the existing. club record.

Then on 8th May he rode a 50 on the Bentley By Pass, H50/8, and took 1m-15s off his personal best. The new record is 1h-47m-45s and it's the third time that Steve has lowered it since August last year..

Pete Avis

It is with great sadness that we have to report that our oldest member Pete Avis died last Sunday. It was only in the last 2 years that he lost his independence and had to move to a care home.

He celebrated his 100^th birthday in January and this is Pat Hill’s account of it from the current club magazine.

OUR OLDEST FAIRY

On 26th January Pete Avis celebrated his 100th Birthday & several of our older members visited him at the Betsy Clara Nursing Home at Tovil where he now lives, on that day. The staff had made a special room available for Christine, Keith & Andy to entertain visitors & share a glass of wine & a slice of his 100th Cake plus admire the many balloons & cards, including one from the Queen!! Most of us went straight from Wed Wobblers at Benover & tried to stagger our arrivals in case Pete found all the excitement a bit too much. The first wave included Dick Bradley, Dick Wallis, Roly Crayford, Roger Brimsted, John Kavanagh, John Wells, Roy Manser, & Geoff King. Rod Overton who has kept in touch with Pete since leaving the club a number of years ago, was also there.

As they all left, Alan & Iris Chapman & I arrived with me bearing the special National VTTA Certificate that said that Pete was only the 2nd VITA member nationally ever to reach 100. A good chat was had by all although Pete had begun to look a bit tired so nobody lingered long. Pete has achieved a special place in many older Fairy hearts. He & wife Nora provided the SFA with a clubroom in the cellar at their home in Florence Road Maidstone for many years, which he kitted out with a bar etc & many of us have fallen up his stairs on our way home after clubnights, after sampling his stock of home-made wine. We remained there until the mid 70s when he Nora & his mother & sister moved to Wales to enjoy many years of living in a small Welsh community where again he made many of us welcome. He has been a strong racing man in his time, a great clurun rider, & has been a father figure to several Fairies now in their 70s who still revere him for the help he gave them in their early days in the club.

Many members will want to attend his funeral on 28^th March and his family have given this information.

This to let you know that the funeral service for Pete Avis will take place at Vinters Park Crematorium on Monday 28th March 2011. The hearse will arrive there at 2:40 p.m. for the service timed to start at 2:45 p.m.

It is our wish that no flowers are sent but should anyone might wish to make a voluntary donation in his memory it was Pete's wish that the Salvation Army should be the recipient as he always said they were the only ones that showed genuine concern to him and his air force friends during their service in WW2. He himself has remembered them in his will.

After the funeral there will be a reception at the Russell Hotel on Boxley Road, Penenden Heath where we have booked a room where family and friends can gather to chat and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee along with sandwiches and cakes.

We would be grateful if you could forward this on to club members as all who wish to attend the funeral and/or reception will be most welcome. It would be most helpful if those wishing to come to Russell Hotel could somehow let us know in order that we get a rough idea how many to cater for.

In addition should anyone have any special memories of Pete to express then we would be glad to hear them. We will be meeting with Major ?? of the Salvation Army next Monday (21st) to discuss the service requirements and would like to include something about his lifelong love of his cycling club and the many friends he had there.

Clubnights are now one a month

Very reduced attendances over the past few years indicate that there is virtually no interest in the weekly Tuesday clubnights. Consequently there will be just one clubnight each month, on the third Tuesday of every month.

Signing on night for this years evening club events has been advertised as 22nd March and so the clubroom will be open for this.

The first training session was held at Bower Grove school in Barming on 30th October with 13 riders taking part..

As a Sports Academy Bower Grove school has formal links with various sports clubs and our link means that San Fairy Ann CC is now a community linked club.

Whilst our initial involvement is running sessions teaching bike handling skills we will be organising a range of off road events and races for those who want to put their new skills to further use.

Three records in 3 weeks

Steve Berry's 12 hour is now officially 276.532 miles. As well as being a new club record it is also a new Kent Cycling Association record and a contribution to his new KCA Best All Rounder record average speed of 25.380mph.

That ride gave Steve 3 records and over the next 2 weekends he set 2 more club records - at 25 miles with 51 minutes 15 seconds and at 50 miles with 1 hour 49 minutes zero seconds. With Mike Piper and Ian Sutton he also had a share in the new club 25 mile team record of 2 hours 39 minutes 35 seconds.

Having set a new club 100 mile record in July Steve now has every one from 25 miles to 12 hours.

Thinks . . . . . .there will be a Sussex based 24 hour next year . . . . . .

Another club record - 12 hours

Congratulations to Steve Berry who has broken another club record. In the Kent Cycling Association 12 hour on 5th September his provisional mileage was given as 276. Although still subject to official confirmation there is little doubt that the previous record of 273.324 will be up-dated.

Congratulations also to Natalie Bent and Mike Perry who were both riding a 12 hour for the first time. Natalie covered 215 miles and Mike 192 (both provisional). This is Mike's first full year of racing - a few years ago he dug the bike out of its thirty odd years hibernation for the occasional commute to work and marked his retirement with this 12 hour. (not on the same bike!)

Young riders' success

Not to be outdone by the older riders Jack Edwards and Tom Moore won their age categories in the GHS 10 on 10th July. Matty Waters backed them up to be the winning team.

A Rush of Records

Our leading time triallists have been busy up-dating some of the club records.

On 22nd May Ian Sutton did 1hr-49m-41s to take 35 seconds off the 50 mile record that he set last year.

On 12th June he reduced Ian Silvester's 1995 100 mile record by 24 seconds with 3hr-53m-46s.

On 3rd July Mike Piper did 10 miles in 19m-36s to take 3 seconds from Andy Naylor's 2004 record.

Also on 3rd July Steve Berry took 6 seconds off Ian's 2009 25 mile record with 51m-45s

A week later Steve reduced the 100 mile record to 3hr-48m-24s, a time that gave him 9th place in the National Championship 100.

Congratulations to all three with special mention of Steve - his first ever time trial was our Novices 8 miles in March 2009!

Clubroom Summer Hibernation

Winning start to Time Trial season

33 club members made up teams in the Kent Cycling Association 3-up 25 on 14th March. Ian Sutton, Steve Berry and Mike Piper justified being given the favourites starting position by winning the event. Not to be outdone Natalie Bent, Sarah Sutton and Nicky Hughes were fastest Ladies team and Jodie Hope, Nathan Finnis and Tom Moore won the Junior team.

A week later Michael Barnes backed Ian and Steve to win the team award in the Kent Cycles 25.

In the KCA 25 on 11th April the winning team was Mike Piper, Ian Sutton and Michael Barnes.

On 17th April Mike Piper won the West Kent 10 and backed by Steve Berry and Andy McPherson took another team prize. Kate Bosley was the fastest Lady.

How many 12 year old girls have ridden the Wigmore - or any other - hillclimb racing against mum and dad?
This unusual club and event record was set by the Bicycling Bosleys, dad John, mum Kate and daughter Sarah.

Records Up-dated

As the club numbers passed the 400 mark our racing members have been reaching new heights.

In May Ian Sutton, Mike Piper and Damian Cairns set a new Team 25 mile record of 2h-40m-28s, taking 7m-03s off the one set in 1988.

Since then the Team 10 mile record was broken by Ian, Mike and Dave Stocker with 1h-03m-02s, taking 27s off the one set in 2004. This record lasted just one hour, when Steve Berry helped reduce it to 1h-01m-59s.

Ian Sutton then set a new 50 mile record of 1h-50m-16s, taking 32s off the one set in 1982

He then took the 25 mile record with 51-51, an improvement of 57s on the 1988 one. Mike Piper started after Ian and did 51-52 - he should have asked for an early start!

Michael Barnes set a new Junior 50 mile record with 2h-08m-06s, taking 50s off the one set in 1968.

Another outstanding achievement was Scott Webb's ride in the 12 hour night mountain bike race at Bedgebury. Riding only his second race he covered 16 laps of the 9 mile circuit. This was 2 laps more than the second solo rider and also beat all the teams of four.

The social rides are also going from strength to strength, with last Saturday's 6 groups having a total of 98 riders.

New National and Club records

7 club members rode the Team Cambridge 10 on 1st August and set 3 new records.

Roy Manser and Roly Crayford set a National Veterans record for their combined age group with 22m-22s.

In the solo event Ian Sutton (20.27), Mike Piper (20.30) and Dave Stocker (22.05) took 27 seconds off the club 10 mile Team record.

Steve Berry then finished with 21.02 so reducing it by a further
1m-03s to 1-01-59.

The solos were all personal best times and Sarah Sutton made it a full set with 24-15.

Club Nights in summer hibernation

At the AGM last December there was a proposition to discontinue the Tuesday evening clubnights because the lack of support did not justify the hire charge of £19 an evening. It was decided to trial the following changes for 6 months , after which the committee would consider the position.
      -move the committee meeting from Friday to the first Tuesday of each month
      -bring out the magazine on the second Tuesday
      -arrange some sort of special evening on one of the remaining Tuesdays each month.

Initially the magazine and "special" evenings did increase the numbers but more recently they have fallen away again. The committee have reviewed the position, taking into account the these factors
      - the committee is too large to meet in someone's house. If we cancel our booking for all except the first Tuesdays any new booking that wants the hall every Tuesday would take priority
      -we need storage space for the rollers and table tennis table
      -the special evenings (Ladies Nights and talks) attracted more during the winter months.

The decision is to close the clubroom during July, August and September then run the usual weekly meetings and some "special" evenings again. The Quiz and French Night on 30th June will therefore be the last clubnight until it reopens on 13th October.

To maintain our booking we will continue to pay the hire charge during the hibernation.

New 25 mile Team record

Ian Sutton, Mike Piper and Damian Cairns were some of the club members who travelled to Wales to ride the Ogmore Valley Wheelers 25 on the R25/3H course. They have all been doing fast times on our local courses and decided to see what they could do on a nationally recognised fast course.

Ian did a 53-01, Mike 53-06 and Damian 54-21. Subject to ratification their team time of 2-40-28 took just over 7 minutes off the previous record that had stood since 1988.

supported as riders made the most of a dry not-too-cold day.

The last of this year's series had another good entry but not the dry conditions of the first two. Despite the rain, hail and snow showers all the events were well supported. The first and last races caught the worst if it and one rider in the last one finished suffering with hypothermia. After receiving medical attention he was able to return home.

The Rootes Trophy returns home

After a 2 year absence the Rootes Trophy is now safely back on Pat's mantelpiece.

Thanks to a mass entry at all 3 distances we had the greatest number of successful finishers in the KCA Reliability Trial.

£1,600 to Kent Air Ambulance

The B Group clubrun called in at the Kent Air Ambulance base to present a cheque for £1,612. This had been raised by the 73 mile Cyclo Sportive in May.

Next years ride will be on 4th May during the first May Bank Holiday weekend.

Anthony Bristow is Club Track Champion

Anthony Bristow won a closely fought Club Track Championship at Herne Hill last Sunday. Dick Naylor and Eric Lejeune were both only 2 points behind, with Dick taking 2nd place by virtue of better placings in the Points and 5 Mile races.

Club Success in the KCA 12 hour race

Ian Sutton took 3rd place with the 248 miles and supported by Rob Tipples with 217 miles and Eric Lejeune doing 194 miles in his first 12 hour, they were the fastest team.

The heading says it all. By parking behind the library and riding down to meet up at the station, we can avoid the station's charges and still keep the library car park clear of the former crowd of bikes & bodies. UNPAID PARKING AT THE STATION RISKS CLAMPING WITH A £90 RELEASE FEE. Still no charge to park on Sundays.

Entries for this year's 116k Cyclo Sportive were more than double last years. Advance entries were well above those of the 2 previous years and the fine weather encouraged a lot more to enter on the day.

New meeting place in Marden

From 19th January, the meeting place for all clubruns that start in Marden will be the Railway Station Car Park. We are moving because at times there are so many of us in the library car park that access to the recycling bins becomes difficult. We also take up a lot of the parking spaces. The railway station is only just down the road, between the church and Pattenden Lane. Parking is free at weekends when the car park is virtually deserted.

Club Bottles

More Riders on more clubruns

The number of riders out on Saturday mornings continues to increase - in the last few weeks, we have had 98 and 102. A new group has been formed, the Earlybirds, catering for those who want a ride of 40 to 50 miles with the traditional coffee stop but getting back by 1 o'clock. To do this, it starts at 9 o'clock, hence the name. It's only 'early' when compared to the 10 o'clock start of the other 5 Saturday groups.

A total of 140 riders entered these rides. With a 2am start, the 300km riders endured heavy rain for the first few hours. Those starting at 8am and later enjoyed a glorious sunny day.

A record number of 14 new members in July included Thom Nixon who became the 300th current member. This was recognised with an informal presentation of a club jersey at a clubnight.

The club helped with the Maidstone Borough Council CycleFest in Mote Park and the Barming Tour de France Fun Day. There was also a display of club photos in Maidstone Library.

Ladies-Only interclub 10 mile time trial

This unusual event was between ladies of the Rye District Wheelers and the San Fairy Ann. There were 15 riders, the winning team being the one with the best total time of the fastest 6. Although outnumbered, our ladies won the evening.

New and Improving Time Trial Riders

There has been a strong upsurge in interest with a number of Saturday clubrun regulars, including 5 ladies, testing themselves against the clock. Ian Sutton has improved with almost every ride, breaking the magic hour for 25 miles and only 39 seconds outside 2 hours for 50 miles. Many others have also recorded personal best times.

Train and Easyride

21 Easyriders enjoyed a very different saturday, taking the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch train from Dungeness to Hythe and then riding back to Dungeness. It was a real family day, with 5 young children - 3 on trailing bikes and 2 in kiddy seats. The traditional coffee stop became an ice cream stop.

Results of Cyclo Sportive 8th May

The second running of this event saw an improvement in both the number of entries and the weather. 52 of the 74 entries achieved standard medals, the 4 finished outside their times and the others had second thoughts about starting when they saw the rain.

Promising Young Riders

The highlights of the last month have been the Road Race performances of 18 year old Joe Godding and 17 year old James Driscolls confident Track Racing debut in the Herne Hill Goog Friday meeting. In his first three races, Joe has finished 16th, 6th and 2nd and is already a 3rd category rider. James rode the White Hope sprint, Devil and 15 lap Scratch race

A Busy Time

There is a high level of activity in every aspect of the club. Saturday's 5 clubruns have a regular 60-70 out, 24 members rode their first ever race in our 2 Novice club time trials, another 24 made up 8 teams in the KCA 4-up 25, the cyclo cross season ended with a team of 4 riders in 1 event (including a lady), several members are riding Audax events (one has just completed the Ride Round the Year challenge by doing a 200K ride in each of 12 consecutive months) and there have been trips to ride the indoor tracks at Newport and Calshott. In the coming months in addition to our usual 50 mile and 10 mile Open time trials, we are running the 73 mile Cyclo Sportive for Kent Air Ambulance again, plus a new shorter ride for occasional cyclists. We are also helping with Maidstone Borough Council and Barming Parish Councils Tour de France Events

Tour de France

We've been asked by KCC and Maidstone Borough Council for help with their efforts to use publicity generated by the Tour to promote all aspects of cycling.

In addition, we are helping Barming Parish Council's Tour de France Sports Day (about 500 yards from the A26 Tour route), and of course, many members will be helping as Tour marshals.

Successful Cyclo Cross Promotion

For probably the first time in its 80 year existance on the 12th November, the club promoted a Cyclo Cross race for the London Cyclo Cross Association. With a pleasant sunny day, over 100 riders took part.

Successful Audax Weekend

Increasing the two Sunday rides of previous years to six rides over Saturday and Sunday proved very sucessful. Everyone, from the experienced riders who tackled the very hilly 300k to the Easy Riders doing the flat 50k were full of praise for the routes, organisation and friendliness of club members

Kent County Show

At the request of British Cycling and KCC, we had a stand to publicise cycling in general and the Tour De France in particular. It was part of the overall KCC stand and the section that included our stand won the gold award for 'Best in Show' by a KCC department.

Once again, we had fine weather for the Maidstone to Canterbury "spoke" of this county-wide ride. Over 70 riders were despatched from Mote Park by the deputy mayor Richard Ash.

New Club Jersey

Successful Cyclo Sportive

Riders confirmed that the new 118k Cyclo Sportive on Monday 1st May lived up to its "Challenging" description. Heavy rain in the early morning probably reduced the number of riders, but we have donated ££354 to the Kent Air Ambulance. The choice of route, extensive signage and marshaling and the refreshments on the Romney Marsh were all praised by many riders. We hope to make this an annual event on the early May bank holiday Monday.

An Extended Promotion

After 2 years of running 150k and 100k Audaxes on a Sunday, we are adding another 3 rides on the Saturday to make an Audax weekend. The Saturday rides will be: a hilly 300k, a hilly 100k and a very easy 50k. The Sunday will include a 200k ride in addition to the existing 150k and 100k rides.

Each day was a separate 200k Audax ride and the individual titles provide a summary of the week - "Lands End is where we start", "Eventually the West Country ends", "To follow Offa", "Open fields then a Shap rise", "Just Esk Dale", "Only big hills" and "Greet the Groat". The extra person in the photo is the driver of their support vehicle.

Every fourth year, Audax UK run the 14 ,000 km ride from London to Edinburgh and back. Riders must complete the route within 155 hours. Andy Uttley did this in July.

Dick Bradley's 50th Anniversary

In 1955, a very yound Dick Bradley rode his first ever 12 hour race. He celebrated the 50th anniversary by riding this year's Kent Cycling Association 12 hour race, covering 190 miles.

Fairies in France

Fourteen Easyriders recently organised a Sunday ride to France, spending as much time enjoying a typical French lunch as they did riding. No to be out-done, another 17 made a similar excursion a few weeks later. They also had a long lunch hour, but also fitted in 60 hilly miles, including visiting the viewpoint on Cap Blanc-Nez.
