Thankyou Speedy Gonzales Tony for a lovely ride today.
An average turn out of 7 started off from Chestnut Street.Richard led and in very overcast weather(as usual from ChestnutSt),headed off for a longer ride to Tankerton. They went out via Borden,Tunstall and Rodmersham, then onto Tenyham where Keith got the only puncture of the day.Off again to Luddenham and through Faversham to Graveney, into a very busy Whitstable to the break at a little cafe overlooking the Thames estuary at Tankerton, sitting out in the very warm sunshine. With the tide out and visibility good,it was most enjoyable. The return leg again took them through Whitstable and around Faversham, then onto Ospringe,Painters Forstal and Newnham. However, the heavy clouds were gathering, and by the time they got back near Rodmersham and Borden, they had to take cover under trees with torrential rain.Carrying on through the puddles to the finish.A distance of 46 miles at 13.6 mph average.
Chris led the ride from East Malling with 15 starters including Les and Eddie on their electric bikes and two new riders from Ashford who had already tried a B+ ride. After going through the Research Station we joined Kiln Barn Road and then into The Heath before climbing to Offham via West Malling. Not long after Offham Eddie got a puncture on his bike and decided to return. Crossing 7 mile line, the road past Comp had just been resurfaced so care was needed on the loose topping, but no problems. Instead of our usual route down Long Mill Lane Chris kept on the ridge to go down Gover Hill, then Matthews Lane to a short run on the A26 before heading through East Peckham. Along the cycle way beside the A228 seemed the safest way to get to the road into Paddock Wood for the coffee stop. Beautiful sunshine so we all sat outside for the efficiently served good food. The return was via Queen Street and Laddingford to Yalding, then up Kenward and Hunt Street to join the East Farleigh Road and over Teston Bridge. The long climb up Teston Hill spread out the peloton before regrouping at the North Pole pub and back to East Malling via The Heath and Stickens Lane. Total of 32 miles at 12.6 mph average.
Last couple of rides have been from Snodland and Wrotham. Both luckily rain free and fairly well attended. From Snodland we went to Nev's cafe on the Frindsbury trading estate, out via upper Halling,Cobham and Shorne ,before having a quick stop outside Upnor castle. The way back via Rochester and the new road past Wouldham and Aylesford without incident and about 35 miles.our Wrotham ride last week took about 8 of us to Swanley,a usual route via Longfield and Hawley to cafe Ciro in Swanley village.Heavy skies on the return via Farningham and Knatts valley.A fairly lumpy ride, again about 35 miles.
A bumper turn out today with 20 riders at Yalding. Richard volunteered to lead again and we headed towards Bedgebury Pinetum through Laddingford, onto Horsmonden and then an “easier route” around Goudhurst. Richard had said this would be “undulating” but not steep like the climb into Goudhurst.. Well it was definitely undulating with a few short steep climbs, very taxing for a few riders. We went through Kilndown and then a short stretch of main road to Bedgebury, where the café was very quiet. They coped very speedily with the food and drink orders, and their cake selection was excellent. Because the outgoing pace had been a bit too much for some of us we agreed their would be a slower group of about 5 for the return. Richard proposed going straight up the main road hill into Goudhurst, to get it out of the way asap. Infact it was better than the undulating route. Return then by the same route after Horsmonden. Total of 31.5 miles at 12 average by the slower group.
